I recently came upon a Mckinsey & Company report on ‘Great Attrition’ or Great Attraction’ the choice is yours. The opening statement of the write-up reads as follows ‘At a time when a record number of employees are quitting, organizations that take the time to learn why will have an edge in attracting and retaining talent.’

The above situation got my attention because I have been pondering on the changes we are witnessing within the workspace across the various industries and societies for a while now. One thing stands out; obviously, people are rethinking how work should be carried out, moving away from the traditional way it has been done over the last 100 years plus. This thinking has been around over the past two decades, but the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the thought to the front burner in people’s minds.

Policymakers and captains of industries are now saddled with the responsibility of answering the question. People are now leaving paid jobs; the report stated that ‘More than 19 million US workers—and counting—have quit their jobs since April 2021, a record pace disrupting businesses everywhere. Companies are struggling to address the problem, and many will continue to struggle for one simple reason: they don’t really understand why their employees are leaving in the first place. Rather than take the time to investigate the true causes of attrition, many companies are jumping to well-intentioned quick fixes that fall flat: for example, they’re bumping up payor financial perks, like offering “thank you” bonuses without making any effort to strengthen the relational ties people have with their colleagues and their employers. The result? Rather than sensing appreciation, employees perceive a transaction. This transactional relationship reminds them that their real needs aren’t being met.

This change is real, and people are ‘waking’ up to the reality of the times and asking a serious question about their lives, their meaning, and the value it brings.

So in this episode of the word café, we touched on the principle of work and how the current work culture that is undergoing a transformation started? How the structures we know came about, and what informed them? Has time exposed the inherent flaws, or have these principles expired, that is, outlived their usefulness and, as such, need to be evaluated?
